AIO Trackers: What They Are and How Companies Are Using Them to Win in AI Search
By Garry M. Callis Jr.
There are a lot of AIO trackers out there, but most people don't even know what they are to begin with. In this article, we explain the importance of AIO trackers, and how they can be used to augment your business.
POV: Your rankings have not changed. Your impressions are stable. But clicks are down, and no one can explain where they went.
For a growing number of queries, the answer is not in your rank tracker. It is above it.
Google's AI Overviews now resolve a significant share of informational queries before a user ever reaches organic results. The companies that know which of their target keywords trigger an AI Overview, who gets cited in it, and how that is changing over time are making fundamentally different decisions than the ones still looking only at position and CTR. An AIO tracker is the tool that gives them that picture.
Here is what it is, why it matters, and what the teams using this data are actually doing with it.
What Is an AIO Tracker?
An AIO tracker is a tool that monitors Google Search for the presence and content of AI Overviews on a defined set of keywords. At minimum, it tells you whether an AI Overview appeared for a given query, what sources were cited in it, and how both of those change over time. A lot of these trackers are also offering insights right then and there as to how you could fix your content to rank better in search results.
More capable implementations add:
Competitive citation tracking: which domains appear in AI Overviews for your target keywords, and how often
Content change correlation: whether updates to a page coincide with gaining or losing AI Overview citations
SERP feature monitoring: whether the AI Overview is displacing a featured snippet, local pack, or other feature that previously drove traffic
Alerting: notifications when an AI Overview appears for a keyword where one did not exist before, or when your citation status changes
The core value is visibility into a part of the SERP that standard rank trackers do not cover. Position 1 tells you where your blue link sits. An AIO tracker tells you what is happening above it. Being one of those ten blue links isn't all that matters anymore. When that system crumbles like dust in the wind, will AI know who you are?
Why Traditional SEO Tools Do Not Cover This
Standard rank tracking tools monitor organic position. They were built for a SERP where the top result was the most important real estate. That is still true for some query types. For informational and how-to queries, it is increasingly not.
Semrush's research on AI Overviews found that AI Overviews appear most frequently on informational queries, the same query type that makes up the majority of content marketing targets. When an AI Overview appears, it sits above all organic results and answers the question directly. A tool that only tracks where your blue link ranks does not register whether an AI-generated answer just absorbed the intent of that query.
The practical consequence: teams using only traditional rank trackers are looking at position data that no longer fully explains their traffic. A keyword holding steady at position 2 with a declining CTR likely has an AI Overview above it. Without an AIO tracker, the traffic drop looks unexplained. With one, the cause is visible and the response becomes specific.
Understanding how AI-driven search changes the rules compared to traditional SEO is the context that makes AIO tracking data meaningful.
How Companies Are Using AIO Trackers Right Now

Spotting Which Queries Have Shifted to Zero-Click
The first thing most teams do with an AIO tracker is run their top-traffic keywords through it and find out which ones now trigger an AI Overview. The results are often surprising.
A keyword that has driven consistent traffic for two years may now resolve entirely inside an AI Overview for most users. The page still ranks. The clicks dropped six months ago. The tracker explains why.
Once a team knows which queries have shifted, they can make a targeted decision: restructure the page to get cited inside the AI Overview, shift focus to queries where AI Overviews do not appear, or both. That is a fundamentally different response than "we need to improve this page's CTR" with no diagnosis behind it.
An e-commerce brand in the home goods space used this audit to discover that 14 of their top 30 informational keywords, all of which drove traffic to category-level content, now consistently triggered AI Overviews. They shifted those pages toward citation-optimized structure and redirected new content investment toward transactional queries where AI Overviews appear far less frequently. Now this example is fictional in nature, but the impact is far too real. When you're able to shift your content strategy to query-first, answer content, you'll see a massive pivot in your citations. Because your job is now to directly answer the question your buyer asks within the first 50 words of an article, or the first 10 seconds they read.
Tracking Competitor Visibility Inside AI Overviews
Imagine your site holds position 2 for a cluster of high-value keywords. A competitor ranking position 6 keeps showing up in the AI Overview citations above you. Think about that for a second, you've most likely been doing everything right from a traditional SEO standpoint, and yet this position 6 poser is out-ranking you? How? Because they're doing the work that allows them to be seen, cited, and most importantly, trusted by AI.
AI Overviews pull from a small set of sources per query. Getting cited in one is not just about answering the question. It is about being the source Google trusts to answer it. Knowing which competitors appear in those citations, and for which queries, tells you where your authority gaps are. We've said this before ad nauseum, but the brands who are going to show up in the next 3-5 years will be the ones that AI can confidently talk about. So if you're laying the proper citation groundwork now, then you'll have no issues with AI citing you as the answer to queries.
Teams using AIO trackers for competitive monitoring look for two signals: which competitors appear consistently across a keyword cluster, indicating topical authority Google has assigned; and which competitor pages get cited despite ranking lower in organic results, a structural signal that their content is more extractable, not better ranked. Both findings translate directly into content decisions.
Identifying Which Content Gets Cited and Why
Gaining an AI Overview citation is not random. The structural patterns in pages that earn citations are consistent: direct answers near the top of the page, clear heading-and-answer pairs, standalone sentences that provide value without surrounding context, and schema markup where applicable.
AIO trackers that log citation history help teams identify which of their own pages earn citations and which do not, then compare their structure. That comparison reveals the gap between content that ranks and content that gets cited, which are different problems with different fixes. Building content that AI engines can actually extract is the structural work that AIO citation data points toward. Connecting AI Overview Data to Revenue Decisions
The teams getting the most out of AIO tracking are not just monitoring visibility. They are tying it to actionable business outcomes.
A practical implementation looks like this: an AIO tracker flags that a high-converting keyword cluster started triggering AI Overviews three months ago. Cross-referencing with GA4 landing page data shows a corresponding drop in organic sessions to those pages during the same period. The revenue impact is now quantifiable, not speculative. That is the kind of data that gets a content restructuring project prioritized over other work. You can also isolate that kind of data and tie it to mobile usage, and have your dev team focus more on responsiveness and UX. There are so many possibilities which come from these insights, now it's a matter of interpreting it for your business and the outcomes you need.
A statement like; "Traffic dropped because of algorithm changes" is hard to act on. "This keyword cluster started triggering AI Overviews three months ago and sessions to those pages dropped 34% in the same window" is not. Having clear, actionable intel what can allow you to create changes in your content is huge. If you can clearly see, in real time, how this query affects search traffic, you can make content specifically geared towards getting you noticed and cited by AI.
What to Look for in an AIO Tracker

This is a mockup of an AIO tracker created by Perplexity Computer. Using GA4 information, we were able to compile this basic version of what an AIO tracker looks like.
Not all AIO tracking tools offer the same depth. Before choosing one, these are the capabilities worth checking:
Keyword-level monitoring. The tool should let you track a defined keyword list, not just surface AI Overview data for broad categories, so you can monitor the specific queries that matter to your business.
Citation tracking. Knowing an AI Overview appeared is useful. Knowing which domains were cited in it is actionable. Prioritize tools that show source attribution, not just presence or absence.
Historical data. AI Overview behavior changes. A keyword that did not trigger one last month may trigger one this week. Tools that store historical data let you identify trends rather than just current state.
SERP feature context. AI Overviews do not exist in isolation. Knowing whether a featured snippet, People Also Ask box, or local pack also appears on the same query helps you understand the full competitive landscape above organic results.
Integration with search performance data. The most useful implementations connect AI Overview visibility to click and impression data so you can correlate changes in AI Overview presence with changes in traffic.
